Position Overview

Role: Senior Backend Software Engineer

Type: Contract

Rate: $1,500 monthly stipend

Remote: Yes

Schedule: Flexible hours

Stack: TypeScript, Node, MongoDB, Express, Zod, Google Cloud Platform

About the Project

Compass is an open-source weekly calendar for ambitious minimalists. It’ll become the go-to app for millions of busy and hard-working people. More importantly, it’ll help people realize how precious time is. To get there, however, it’ll need features — those that every calendar user expects, and those they didn’t know they needed. The Senior Backend Engineer will take the lead on turning those features ideas into reality.

Benefits

  1. 100% Remote
  2. AI First: We are early-adopters of AI, and encourage everyone on the team to experiment with it to help them achieve more. We’re currently experimenting with OpenAI Codex, for example.
  3. Work on your schedule: no working hours or minimum set of hours per week. You are assessed by the quality and speed of your PRs, not by how many hours you log.
  4. Open-source: your contributions are visible on the open-source repo, making it easier to find future jobs
  5. Easier to find future jobs: If you’d like to eventually convert to full-time, you will be given preference over other candidates. If you’d like to work elsewhere, I’m happy to be a reference for your future job searches

Responsibilities

  1. Author and merge 2-4 weekly pull requests (due by 5:00 am CST Sunday)
  2. Review PRs from contributors, ensuring quality
  3. Accept responsibility for team goals. It’s important to me to get your buy-in on the team goals. I don’t need a “ticket grabber,” who just worries about their current issue while ignoring the business and users. I need a teammate who is willing to share responsibility for our outcomes.
    1. Our currently team goal is to become profitable in 2025 (see our Roadmap on the doc site).
